Communicating With Your Realtor Class 101


Reducing risks and surprises when buying or selling a home simply can’t happen unless there is good communication between you and your realtor. So how do you make that happen?

I started dating my husband in 1983. Here we are, 30 some odd years later and there are STILL days when it feels like nailing jello to a wall may be easier than effectively communicating with him. And chances are that the person you are using to help you make the biggest financial transaction of your life you’ve known far less than that. Effectively communicating during the purchase of a home is paramount. One goal that is usually consistent for realtors is: minimize risk and surprises. (Note to self: if you have a gut feeling that your realtor gets excited about playing with your money....and gets giddy at horrific surprises....you may want to run for the hills and send that realtor packing.) Reducing risks and surprises when buying or selling a home simply can’t happen unless there is good communication between you and your realtor. So how do you make that happen?


The best way to communicate with your realtor is to let them know the best way to communicate with you! Are you someone who prefers texting to emailing? Do you like to meet in person for more serious conversations? Would you prefer to have a root canal over actually TALKING on the phone? Can you be reached during business hours? Do you get offended if you get a text at 11:30pm? I said it before and I’ll say it again: real estate transactions are some of the biggest financial decisions of your life. YOU need to let your realtor know how to communicate with you. They are a realtor, not a psychic.


Now there’s a flip side to this....so don’t start feeling too big for your britches just yet. Here are a few basic facts: your realtor works for you. YOU are their client. And they want to do a good job for you (I’m a “glass half full” gal, what can I say). But ...here’s the flip side...you need to commit to the communication approach that you provide to your realtor. Things will fall apart faster than weight gain after 10 days on the cabbage soup diet if you don’t communicate back to the realtor. If you tell them you are available to text during the day but every time they text you, you go all zero-dark 30...there’s a problem. Yes, things happen and we all have experienced a monkey wrench being thrown into our lives. But the reality is that there are deadlines and timelines that must be met in a real estate transaction. That can’t successfully happen without communication between you and your realtor.


So take-aways for you to ponder...and then COMMIT to:


1) Figure out the best way for your realtor to communicate with you.

2) Share that information with your realtor.

3) Be available and respond to your realtor when they reach out to you.
